To all the smart ones here. In 2020, explain to me how you close the gap between evolution and the Cambrian explosion, and with all the advancement in molecular biology, so much for that comment on intelligent design 10 years ago, some scientists are grappling on how to hold on to evolution at every cost ( I mean the process of natural selection, and randomness, not change over time and adaptation) while others are already thinking that there has to be another way “more intelligent way”. I’ll wait…

What i learned here is if you believe something exist its exist. But if not its isnt. But i think its better believe something than skeptical everythings for your entire life, Yes god, ghost, alien, etc concept is vague. Believers just keep doing what you believe, skeptics just keep your opinion to yourself and fellow skeptics. Dont be biased. Because if someone skeptics too much they believe what they are skeptic is. Human need to believe something to be alive. And believers just dont force someone to believe things youve think always right. In the end eord atheist, believer, skeptics i think isnt really matter, its all part of human.

He doesnt say that aliens dont exist, just that they probably werent on earth a few millenia ago to help build random pyramids in the middle of the desert, or that they probably arent kept in scientific labs to have experiments made on them. Its likely life exists elsewhere, with the ridiculous number of stars in the universe.

We are not 13.7 billion light-years ( a unit for measuring distance) from the edge of the observable universe.
The AGE of the observable universe is 13.7 billion YEARS (time)..
    😉😉

Now the DIAMETER of the observable universe that we can SEE around us with our most powerful telescopes is 93 billion light-years (distance), with us in the middle of what we see.
The does not tell us where exactly are we in the universe or how big it actually is.
This big visible cosmic sphere around us is only what we can see in all directions.

Which, if youve looked into the issue, based on the evidence, its much harder to believe everything exists randomly and naturally than in the possibility of an intelligent designer/creator.

Dude! We are 46.5 billion light years from the edge of the observable universe, not 13.7. How can that be if the universe is only 13.8 billion years old? Because space itself expands (caused by the the anti-gravity force we call dark energy). The light given off by the earliest and most distant galaxies must traverse a universe that is expanding by at least 68/km/sec/mpsc — the Hubble Constant, and that speed is increasing. Im sure at least a dozen commenters below have pointed this out. You should put in some subtitles to correct it. (Love your Youtubes. Atheism rocks!)

    • muhamed adel

@megakids More of a well mannered ( polite ) people. For example you dont need to offend my religion to prove your point. When you say all religions are such and such, that doesnt prove your point neither it does add to your credibility. We ( Muslims ) would rather have a decent discussion with the opposition.

*So by mercy from Allah, [O Muhammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in the matter. And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah . Indeed, Allah loves those who rely [upon Him].* ( Quran 3:159 )

*I find your belief ludicrous and harmful to human being* you say,
Be specific. which part you find ludicrous/harmful ?

*Religions are not some privileged dogma that cannot be criticized or challenged.*
I believe I said *Ask me anything about Islam* in my first post in case you didnt see it.

*display ultra displeasure and label my view as hate speech*
When you call my religion ludicrous, harmful, …etc, *without any logical proof* Then I can safely assume your only derived by hatred not logic.

Your friends replied, *suit yourself, we dont care ?!*

And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. ( Mark 16:15-16 ESVMark 16:15-16 ESV )

Your friends wouldnt care if you got condemned ?, or they dont believe that you would be condemned ?

No one will force you to accept Islam. But we would go the extra mile for one person to be a Muslim. We appreciate that were Muslims, and wed love to see everyone becoming Muslim because itll not only benefit him but also everyone else.

*There shall be no compulsion in [acceptance of] the religion.* The right course has become clear from the wrong. So whoever disbelieves in Taghut and believes in Allah has grasped the most trustworthy handhold with no break in it. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing. ( Quran 2:256 )

    • muhamed adel

@megakids Ok, mind your tongue first and foremost. This is not a fight. *If you have something to say/ask, say it in a proper manner and I will answer* . And by the way if you cant see something that doesnt mean it doesnt exist thats irrelevant.

You say *especially yours.* and next you say *Im not against Islam* . Apparently youre not aware of what your own words. If you wish to continue the discussion you need to calm down a little. Otherwise, I am not interested in that kind of hate speech.

    • muhamed adel

@megakids So you make an arbitrary claim and I have to carry the burden of proof for you, how come ?

*The burden of proof is on the claimant* . Your claim *Falsehood …* require more evidence to support it.

What about you start by proving that God doesnt exist. Then Ill reply to your claim.

    • muhamed adel

@megakids Yes, making a claim without enough evidence is indeed *Falsehood* You need more than one word to prove your point, otherwise I can say as well. *Truehood… One word is enough* .

Ben Shapiro: So when we talk about the judeo christian law one of the questions  I get from folks like Sam Harris or like Michael Shermer is this.
Lets assume there is this eternal moral law that corresponds to some form of eternal truth and moral law giver. So how has that law evolved over time?
The example they like to use best is slavery. So originally the Bible contemplates that slavery is part of life, and then over time we have decided that not only is slavery not a part of life, but slavery is a grave evil that ought to be fought wherever it exists.  How do we justify evolution in the judeo christian framework of morality?

    Ravi Zacharias:
Well, its of course the metaphysical extrapolation of the naturalistic interpretation of the very origin of life. So when you talk about the evolution of humanity itself they want to talk about the evolution of morality itself also sort of evolving. I think it becomes a circular argument. The argument that somehow we were valueless to start out with and that we just happen to be on this radar screen of time and that we developed these things over time. I think there is a false view of the beginnings, in fact you know very well as a scholar the jewish framework, the very concept of slavery, very different idea from what we interept as to what slavery is all about.

When you talk about Paul talking about how to treat the quote “slave” in the household and that he was willing to be there present and redeem this person, in a socio-economic framework that you have these kinds of terms used and systems used, we are bound to make blunders.

So I would turn the question on its head and say ‘alright, if you believe that we have evolved more morally, why is it in the 20th century that we have killed more people in warfare than all the previous 19 centuries put together? So it is not an honest representation of how we have come to believe in a moral framework. In fact there are some things now that we have reversed over 5000 years of civilized history.

For thousands of years some people never believed some of the things that we have begun to believe. So I would say that, to me, the most important phrase, Ben, in the 10 commandments, I don’t believe there is a better moral framework, that starts with the very being of God and all the way to the sacredness of my life, my neighbors life, my neighbors marriage, my neighbors property. I mean this goes back 3500 years ago.

The most important phrase to me Ben, and that is “I AM THE LORD YOUR GOD WHO BROUGHT YOU OUT OF EGYPT. That redemption is prior to righteousness, and that righteousness leads to worship. So when you get to Exodus 20 and you are dealing with that beautiful moral law, then you move 5 chapters later and you get to the tabernacle and the framework of reference, I think it is the change of heart that it is the only answer to the moral framework.

Here is the scary thing. God did not send us His message to make bad people good. Morality alone will never save us. Sometimes in the name of morality some people have done some horrible things. It is the fact that the heart is in need of redemption, in need of forgiveness, and it is redemption that must proceed righteousness.

So to talk about morality having been evolved, when you go back 3500 years ago, and the moral law was given to us, it was because people had already violated that relationship with God. So I say, far from morality evolving, right from the beginning we have known what it was all about. So what happens in the first three chapters of Genesis happens in this world every day.

What happened in the temptation saga, Ben, I think is very critical. And your book points out what has happened as a result of this flaw, ok? IN THE DAY THAT YOU EAT OF THE TREE OF
THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOOD AND EVIL YOU WILL DIE. That is the word of God. But the enemy of our souls comes in and says “you will be as god, knowing good and evil”. That has been the battle for millenia. What is the battle? To allow God to be God or to play god. What happened when they were confronted? “I didn’t do it, it was the serpent.”

This idea of violating the authority of God and becoming autonomous, and then blaming everything else. This is not evolved. This goes back over 3 millenia and we have challenged it every day, in this victim culture. What are we doing? “It’s not my fault, it’s this persons fault, we don’t believe in absolutes we believe that we have complete autonomy.” We claim to be autonomous but when we go wrong we blame someone else and not us.

So I do not accept this idea that it has somehow evolved. You go back millennia ago and you see the value of human life and the value of a moral law, millenia back.

    End Ravis response.

But this might lead something better.
Find out who won the bid, what theyre plans for it are and how much they have into it.
Also how much they plan to spend, and how long it will take.
Time to use common sense and convince them it will not work and you are an effencie expert. But until they figure that out, you offer to rent it, so it will make them money.
Once in fix it up, keep account of all costs.
Then offer them the opportunity to get out from under, at the bid you originally offered.
Because the cost you put into it is 5 times of their original cost. You win!!!

  57. ThinkingBetter

Some correction…the distance to the edge of the observable universe is about 46 billion light years, because the universe is expanding all of the time.

  58. Lizzy Potatoes

Think of the pocket-watch found on the beach analogy. Theists claim intelligent designer/creator because the evidence highly suggests it. Its not a cop-out, its based on good evidence and reason. Its the atheist that claims that pocket-watch, and if you want to go as far as you can go with the analogy you can use the human brain, that our human brains are RANDOM. I have a word for that too. Its called bull-headed.

    • Bit Shifter

Too bad the good evidence and reason stop when trying to answer who created the creator? Doesnt anything complex need a creator??

observable universe vs the actual universe

  60. DoomGuy

Hes just pointing out the obvious for 15 minutes. Somebody who writes pop music for a living doesnt know astronomy, what a bombshell. Im sure this issue is for the sake of time, but all the debunking he does only shows the bottom of the barrel arguments for whole narratives. Some people make fake UFO pictures, so that means that aliens dont exist and nobody should entertain the idea. You may think Im putting words in his mouth, but this is how the dichotomy goes with such topics. These type of people arent visionaries and arent making bold advancements. The only people they actually stand above on an intellectual level are the lower intellects, people saying things like the Earth is flat and other claims that the answer to which are common and provable. See, the actually stupid people wont be convinced, otherwise they would never have believed such a thing to begin with. You are only seriously broadcasting your opinion to reasonable people, and telling them things they already know. Youre saying obvious things, and being smug because youre smarter than the dumbest people. What you get from that is making reasonable people afraid of expressing new ideas, for the fear that they will be labelled stupid and made fun of. We must accept the fact that you need proof for any claim to be true. You must also accept that just because something isnt provable yet doesnt mean it isnt true, rather that it is not proven. The going idea used to literally be that the Earth was flat, and that you could fall off of its edge if you went far enough. The FACT that the Earth is round was unproven yet true, debunking the idea that we should treat the unproven as concretely false. If we applied this dont form any new thoughts thought process hundreds of years ago, we would still think we live on a flat Earth. Of course you may think since our knowledge as a species has grown since then, that means we can make the call to shut down new ideas. In that, you are claiming one of two things: 1.) Since we know more than they did, that means we are absolute arbiters of truth, or 2.) that we know enough of the truth that we can just stop looking now. Both claims are extremely naïve.

Because they are ignorant, stupid, or both or gullible or because they were taught such things or because other people they trust or respect believe them, and a bunch of other ways….

  64. Herbert Morales

Nothing more disgusting than to hear a man who has an explanation for everything speak with confidence. A wise man will say I dont know once in a while. An idiot will have an answer for everything even if he has to make one.

FEAR is the root of everything bad on the planet thats man-made. Fear itself roots in ignorance.

    • sanjuansteve

Despite the title of the book Fear, I think were neither discussing the properly framed problem, nor the big picture solutions yet. #FearIsTheProblem. Fear is the root of bullying, misogyny, homophobia, racism, bigotry and greed. Fear allows people to mentally wall-off their own empathy to virtually zero. #MakeBigotryShamefulAgain

Three of the biggest generators of fear are 1) out-of-control capitalism and historically unsustainable and exponentially growing wealth and income inequality levels (if you lose your job you might lose healthcare access, your home, car, partner, child custody rights, etc), 2) fear-mongers like Fox/Faux/Fear News, the GOP, etc. (they’re all out to get you, all the time), and 3) religion (evil is waiting around every corner, all your life with eternal unimaginable fiery torture as a deterrent).

Lets be honest, no amount or size of Great Walls, or military spending, or nuclear arsenal, or non US soil military bases and ops, or international weapons sales, or personal weapons and magazine sizes, or of school teachers with guns, or of privatized, militarized (and systemically racist) police and mass incarceration, or of mass deportations including the Dreamers, or of bans of entire groups of people, or of intentionally torturous (and often permanently orphaning) separation of immigrant children as a deterrent, or threats to shoot rock-throwing refugees, or torture of POWs, or control over women, or Space Farces, or border moats filled with snakes and alligators, or anything else will ever Make American Republicans Feel Safe enough…

Every single American Republican policy puts fear and greed (fear) before people and planet (including equality and empathy) and no single policy in the world in the modern era is as patently bigoted and of the scale as their continued fight to ban (and register, and pre-arrest, etc too) all Muslims (a bigotry-blanket of fear/hate covering all 1.8 billion people of all colors, from all nations, of all ages, of all sexes and sexual preferences, etc).

Fear (and the empathy and critical thought it kills) is what separates the right from the left. The fear at the root of ”Nationalism is an infantile disease. It is the measles of mankind.” — Albert Einstein

Liberals hate American Republicans because all of their policies put fear and greed (fear) before people and planet (including equality and empathy).

American Republicans hate liberals for the exact same reasons, because they’re afraid we’ll get in the way of their fear and greed.

Were closer to #AmericanCivilWarII than most people believe and just like before our own friends and family members would take up arms against us for not getting on board with their extreme greed and bigotries just like the Confederates in 1865 or the Nazis in 1938.

With tuition free education, universal healthcare, a universal basic income (UBI) and internet access for all, well raise the starting point of capitalism from zero, well let you die with no money, to a level of life with dignity, reducing societal daily fears on a massive scale which will free us to welcome the coming automation revolution with open arms rather than fear and great harm.
      #getALLmoneyOut #EqualityMovement #BLM

Call me overly positive, but I think we’re leaving the era of ‘greed is good’ and celebrating wealth and entering an era of altruism and equality. Let’s #AutomateEverything and #SkipToAbundance. #EraOfAltruism #CelebrateSelflessness

Please debunk the myth of the climate change caused by CO2 generated through human activity. It is more absurd than your marijuana finder, and taxpayers are not forced to pay for marijuana finders.

@10:47 when he provides the words and we then see them clearly — this reminds me of the Bible verse, Ask and it shall be given. If we already know the answer we are looking for we will always find it. We will see it clearly, even though it is not there.

This is a completely nonsense and bottomless presentation, cause it just makes a laughter out of what is obvioulsy not true and everybody with a strong mind would see it. But this is a strong hit to all real believers who has non explainable sights, experiences with a higher power and of course Jesus himself….if you lough at those bunks dont lough at the christians the same time who have a real sensful relationship with God. Nothing can compare to this, no bunk, no wonders, no science…its unexplanibale but real. All Mr. Schermer does is showing his disrespect to all People who have a real relationship with Jesus. He just makes a lough out of it due to the fact that very many people believe everything the want to….but if you believe in jesus adn get reborn, its not just a bunk illusion its a real experience. Nothing here in this Presentation comes close to it so everything Mr. Shermer does is showing his disrespect and close mind.

    • JamWisme

@TAI you may think you have the real Deal to say God doesnt exists. Just to feel you are right about doesnt make it right. Is for both sides though. But to say what I experience is idiotic just because you lack this experience is in fact idiotic per Definition. You have no ground to hold up your claim. You just have your point of view. And this fairly said, is a big call from somebody who has no clue what a godly experience is. You just made yourself clear to be ignorant and without knowledge so calm and stay silent. Otherwise you may regret those words later on. Good luck, God bless you and never be too sure about anything in this world.

    • TAI

It’s called an illusion. All religious people invested in their religion have these experiences. Claiming these experiences must be accurate is an idiotic take. Gods are made up by humans, deal with it.

    • Hm Grraarrpffrzz

@Abhinav Rao Well, believing in the existence of aliens would make more sense than believing in gods.

    • JamWisme

@Hm Grraarrpffrzz I am honest as I can be. But you dont believe me. So…here we are. Were. Bye

    • Hm Grraarrpffrzz

@JamWisme I just want you to be honest and learn how to have a decent discussion. But you dont need either for your life, so… Good luck.

  87. Beta

I saw this talk on the TED website and I liked it a lot. I dont believe anything. Belief is accepting things with no scientific evidence. Carl Sagan was asked if he believed in God. He said that he did not believe or disbelieve in God, because there is no scientific evidence for either.

  88. filmeseverin

The atheists hope for the impossible, which is that this very complex reality, including intelligent life (mathematics etc.), has appeared by itself, no matter from where it came from, surely without a supreme being, the Creator, that will judge our deeds, just to not feel responsible for their bad deeds, to get away with the evil they did, do and will do, on purpose or by mistake, without any Judgment after their death. They have chosen to try to obtain as much joy as possible from this reality, no matter how much useless suffering (damage) they produce to others, and even to themselves, without the wisdom from the Creator/God/Divinity, respectively from the human form of Divinity, Jesus Christ.

There is no problem between the truth about God/Jesus and science.

This reality could not evolve randomly by itself, without intelligence behind.
Evolution of the Universe to the present time reality (its creation) proves intelligence, otherwise nothing more complex like intelligent life could ever be produced.
The intelligence behind, mentioned above, includes the exact value of the speed of light matching the manifestation of what we call gravity, working together since the primordial conditions to form in the end intelligent life that is able to feel / understand / admire / enjoy / respect / love the Creator.

  92. Marie Wilson

Michael Shermer, if you’ve loved someone wholly and truly on this earth and they passed away, you would have a different opinion about phenomenal events. You’ve turned off a very important piece of your heart by negating these things. Einstein said, “Coincidence is God’s way of remaining anonymous,” and I would have to say Einstein is by far 20 times smarter than you are.

    • Pork N.Beans

Einstein said, “The word God is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honourable, but still primitive, legends which are nevertheless pretty childish.” And I would have to say Einstein is by far 20 times smarter than you are.
